Letterforms Alive | Kinetic Typography

In this project, we explore the world of kinetic typography.  Through the magic of bringing letterforms to life, we will be showing off our experience at Greenside Design Center thus far - who are we as individuals, and what relation does that have to us as students at GDC?  As a team, we have chosen three emotive prompts which capture our experience the best.  Each letter, namely "G", "D" and "C", will be given one of the emotive prompts to represent.

Animation 1 - Whimsical
Whimsical - unusual and unpredictable

A trend that we have noticed in a design college, is that a lot of the students (and even lecturers) enjoy playing video games.

During my school years, I loved playing games.  None of my friends, however, could relate.  Growing up, I didn't have many friends who played games, so that was always something that I kept to myself.  Once I started studying at GDC, however, I met a lot of people who loved playing games.  I was able to not only make new friends due to this mutual interest, but I was able to embrace this side of me a lot more.

This animation is conceptualized from a shared appreciation for starry night, the outdoors, and a mutual passion for gaming, particularly Legend of Zelda and Call of Duty.  It visually represents the transformation of the letter D into a bow, releasing an arrow to eliminate a zombie in the background.

Animation 2 - Explosive
Explosive - something that could cause anger or controversy

Design may be our passion, but that does not mean that there aren't times when we feel like we are at the point of exploding with frustration.  Maybe we are struggling to come up with a good concept, or maybe we are having a hard time figuring out how to manifest our idea into the design software.

This animation takes that anger and frustration and expresses it through the utilization of the contrasting elements of nightlife enjoyment and a dislike for poodles, resulting in a poodle dancing aggressively in a nightclub, only for the scene to escalate, leading to the poodle exploding.

Animation 3 - Zippy
Zippy - fast or speedy

As a student, life is very fast-paced.  Between classes, working on projects, and deadlines, it's hard to find time to relax.  Thankfully, design is our passion, so constantly moving at 1 000 kilometers per hour, isn't always a bad thing!

This dynamic animation draws inspiration from automotive design and aerodynamics.  It portrays the letter C as a fusion of a plane and a car, featuring an engine attached to its base.  The letter then transforms into a swirling motion reminiscent of aerobatic maneuvers for a plane or the spinning motion of a car.
